POLICE have identified two young men as suspects in the savage bashing and robbery of Irishman David Keohane a fortnight ago.

Yesterday, Mr Keohane's father, Tom, asked for the two Pacific Islander men to come forward.

"All I can do is appeal to anybody who was in Coogee Bay Road that night, if they saw those two people or anybody else near David, if they could please get in touch with police," Mr Keohane said.

David Keohane, 29, has been in a critical condition in an induced coma at Prince of Wales Hospital since he was bashed after leaving the Coogee Bay Hotel about 2.30am on August 10.

He was last seen leaving the pub and going across the road to buy a pizza. It is believed he walked up Coogee Bay Road before turning south along Brook Street.

At 3am he was was found in a pool of blood on the footpath at the corner of Kidman Street.

The attack was so vicious that at first investigators believed he had been slashed with a knife. It took several days to identify him. Surgeons have carried out a facial reconstruction.

Detective Inspector Paul Pisanos said the movements of the two men, caught on security cameras and witnessed by residents, suggested they might have been involved in the attack. Information given to police suggests they passed the spot where Mr Keohane was attacked, and witnesses describe seeing and hearing the pair shouting and damaging cars on Brooks Street.

"They were identified by people. We're also able to locate some of David's property along the route we believe these two males took," Inspector Pisanos said.

Mr Keohane's parents, three sisters and a brother flew from their home in County Cork in Ireland and have spent the past two weeks at his bedside.

His father said he was stunned when he first saw his son. "I almost collapsed. I didn't recognise him."

He said doctors had done all they could but a recovery was uncertain.

"They've done what they can. It's up to David now to try and wake up," he said.

The entire family was still suffering from the attack, he said. "We miss David. He was always smiling. We have a picture board above the bed, and in every photograph he is smiling … whether he can smile again, we don't know."

Police have described the two men of Pacific Islander appearance as being about 180 centimetres tall.

One of them has a solid build. His hair is shaved on the sides of his head but is shoulder length and dyed at the back. He was wearing a light-coloured shirt with dark-coloured patterns and blue pants.

The other is of medium build with short dark brown hair, also long at the back. He was wearing a white hooded top and blue pants.

Anyone with information can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800333000 or Maroubra police on 93499299
